I began my martial arts journey like many young children in Tae Kwon Do and Judo.
Over time I moved home and found Lau Gar Kung Fu, a traditional Kung Fu system passed down to my Sifu from Grandmaster Jeremy Yau (Master Yau brought Lau Gar to the UK in 1961)
Lau Gar has been practiced since 1800s and is one of the oldest forms of traditional Kung fu.
I managed to achieve my Black Sash in Traditional Lau Gar along with my 5th Degree Black Belt in Lau Gar Kickboxing ( the modified sport version of Lau Gar)
Being inspired by my coaches and my Sifu I took up studying martial arts full time, training in Muay Thai, Brazillian Juijitsu, Eskrima, Jeet Kune Do and any other martial arts I could commit to. During this period I was competing in Freestyle Kickboxing as part of the London Predators and GBMAA Elite all over the world. To date I have represented England and team GB in Point fighting, Kickboxing, K-1, Mixed Martial Arts and Submission grappling.
I was never the most gifted athlete or fighter I just worked hard and applied my brain to my fights. To me competition is a different skill set to class, if it works in a competition its more likely to help you should you need to defend yourself.
I took a long break from competition after having my son Zak and being a stay at home dad for three years.
I went back to competing in Mixed martial arts as a professional at 37 years old. After taking a three year break from doing shows of any kind and working with Martin Hollis on my grappling skills I decided to step in the cage again against a man some 12 years my junior. I was nervous and it was like being a beginner again. After 3 mins 49 seconds of round one I landed a strong left to his head and managed to score a TKO win with combination of knee strikes and ground and pound. After getting my hand raised I realised there are a few fights left me :)
I aim to bring my own passion for learning and personal development to my classes focussing on the development of the students in my sessions.
